You are especially urged to attend the Innovative Structures Promoting Commercialization of Israeli Life Sciences session in the International Case Studies track. This essential session will present a variety of novel programs designed to support and enhance the business activity of life science companies in Israel.

The session will focus on governmental structures (such as the OCS granting system); public-private structures (such as the recently announced government-backed biotechnology fund); and private structures (such as the Roche-Pharma—the Israeli VC “Pontifax" Agreement). The support given by these structures is not necessarily limited to financial; instead, the support concentrates on the entire value chain of the life sciences industry, beginning with early R&D up to final clinical trials and the commercialization of products. All these structures involve the encouragement of international cooperation between the companies and their introduction to global markets.

Session Goals:
1. Will discuss filling funding gaps by forming funds that combines public and private capital under experienced investment management teams.
2. Will discuss how to address the financial and structural barriers that stymie the growth of the local biotechnology industry.
3. Will outline incentives and channels for foreign investment and global partnering to fuel a stream of innovative technologies.

The session will feature Eli Opper, the Chief Scientist of the Israeli Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Labor; Dan Zabrowski, Executive Vice President at Roche, and Tomer Kariv, General Manager, Pontifax, Alex Kozak, CEO, D-Pharm ; Ora Dar, The Head of the Life Sciences Sector of the Office of the Chief Scientist. The session will take place on Tuesday, May 4th, between 3:15 – 4:00 PM, in Room: S101.

On Wednesday May 5th, at 8:00am, the U.S.-Israel Science and Technology Foundation will hold a U.S.-Israel Business Roundtable in cooperation with Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The roundtable will explore topics in the biotech industry across the U.S. and Israel, including barriers to growth, and industry and government perspectives on issues with doing business in the U.S. and Israel.

Finally, on Monday, May 3rd, at 7:00am, the America Israel Chamber of Commerce Life Science Practice Group held a business patterning event featuring many of the Israeli companies in downtown Chicago.
